MPRE questions, answered
The Multi-state Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) is an exam many people don’t know about coming into law school. In all states but Wisconsin, you are required to pass the MPRE in addition to the Bar exam in order to practice law! The exam is two hours, and 60 multiple choice questions (50 scored). Your score will fall on a scale of up to 150. The passing score will vary by state. For example, California has the highest minimum passing score at 86 (i’ve seen some posts that say this is roughly 30 questions correct but I am not sure). Many Bar prep companies offer an MPRE prep course for free, and your law school will likely offer a Professional Responsibility course (mine requires it).
When I was preparing for the MPRE (which I just received news i passed, yay!) I let my followers submit questions about the exam for me to answer, so here are those questions all in one place:
- Is it formatted similar to the Bar? The test is two hours, and 60 multiple choice questions (50 of which are scored, ten are tester questions).
- Is there an exam fee? Yes, and the fee for me in CA was $135 i believe, so definitely factor this into your law school budgeting.
- How long did you study? I used the Themis MPRE prep course online and studied for four half-days, in addition to being in the Professional Responsibility course at my law school.
- Is it just about how you should interact with clients and coworkers? Basically! This exam tests you on all of the rules of being a lawyer, which do include interactions with clients, judges, etc., as well as duty of confidentiality, dealing with conflicts of interests, etc. There are a TON of rules.
Now that I have the MPRE under my belt I can definitely say a few more days of studying would have made me feel more comfortable with this exam. I left the testing center feeling a bit thrown off about how difficult it was, but thankfully I got a passing score!
