How to dress for law school

Entering law school, my biggest fear was I would be under or over-dressed for class (100% telling the truth!). I had no idea what people wore in lecture. Suits? Business casual? Pajamas likes in undergrad? What I found was that although people did not come to class in pajamas, outfits tended to stay on the “casual-cute” side of things. I only saw students in suits/suit pants at school if they had an on-campus interview or networking event to attend after class.

DO wear something comfortable. You’re going to spend quite a bit of time on campus between class and studying, don’t show up in heels. Wear comfortable shoes. I rocked a beige color pair of Naturalizer flats most of the semester.

DO try to dress reasonably modest. This is law school, after all.

DON’T wear a suit. Unless you have a reason to (networking event, interview, etc.), try to keep your outfits to casual.

DO try to look put together. Tuck in your shirt, don’t wear something a ton of holes in it. Wear colors that look good together. Searching “law school outfits” didn’t really give me a ton of inspiration, because I felt it returned a lot of business-casual results, which I was trying to avoid. Try searching “casual cute” or “teacher style” (this works for me and I love that kind of style LOL).

Overall, a good pair of jeans, some flats, and a nice top would be a great go-to outfit for lecture. Even athleisure is fine, as long as it doesn’t look sloppy. I wore running shorts and leggings plenty of times! Stock up on some staples pieces at Target, grab a comfortable pair of shoes that go well with everything, and get ready for a whole new way of learning!
